What Is Steel Decking?

Steel decking is a corrugated steel that’s used for structural roof decking or composite floor decking.  Steel decking panels are designed to support the insulating membrane of a roof or to support a concrete slab and create a composite steel floor deck system.

What's The Difference Between Steel Decking & Metal Decking?

They're both the same product, but are referred to differently on the East and West Coast. If you're located on the East coast it's more commonly referred to as steel deck and on the West Coast as metal deck.

What Are The Steel Decking Types?

Steel decking suppliers will furnish three types of steel decking material:

  1. Steel Decking For Concrete - These panels are known as steel floor decking or composite floor decking. Steel decking for concrete floors will have embossments within the interior flutes of the panels that allow the concrete slab to bond with the steel decking. This will create a composite floor deck system.
  2. Steel Decking For Roofs - These decking panels are smooth and don't have embossments. They're not designed to have structural concrete poured on top of the panels. These panels are used to support a built up roof system, awnings, canopies, gates, and fences.
  3. Steel Form Decking - Form decking is intended to support the weight of the concrete. It's not a composite floor deck.
